There are mainly two types of cells:
- Primary cell
- Secondary cell
Primary cell
Cells which can only be used once and becomes dead after using once are known as primary cells. This is because the chemical reaction in the cell occursonly once and cells get exhausted afterwards.
Examples: dry cell, daniel cell, mercury cell etc.......
Secondary cell
Unlike primary cells, secondary cells can be recharged again and again by passing direct current through the cell.
Examples : nickel cadmium cell , Lithium ion cell, Lead storage cell etc......
Secondary cells can store electrical energy as chemical energy . So it is also known as storage cell or accumulator.
Fuel cell
It is a galvanic cell in which chemical energy is directly converted to electrical energy. In a fuel cell, reactance is continuously fed and products are continuously removed.
A fuel cell remains in operation as long as the supply of the reactant fuel is continued.Hence a fuel cell resembles an engine.
Advantages of a fuel cell
- Highly efficient (75% efficiency).
- Pollution free, completly freefrom noise, vibration, heat etc....
- Produce electrical energy continuously without drop in voltage.
- Simple to operate.
Uses of fuel cell
As an auxillary energy source in space vehicles, military vehicles, submarines etc....
Lithium-ion cell (Li-ion battery)
Lithium-ion cell (Li-ion battery)
Lithium-ion battery is a rechargable battery in which Li-ion moves
between anode and cathode during charging and discharging. It is more popular than other batteries because of the various characteristics of lithium.Li has a higher negative value forreduction potential and a lower atomic mass than any other metal.Only 6.94 g of Li is required to provide 1 mole of electrons.
In a typicalLithium ion cell, the positive electrode ismadeof crystalline mixed oxide Li2O.Co2O3 or LiCoO2.The crystal contains both lithium and cobalt ion occupying voids of the oxide array. The negative terminal is made up of graphite.
